WALL COLLAPSES IN WESTLANDS KILLING THREE AND INJURING SEVEN

Three people died while seven others were injured when a wall caved in and buried them on Monday, August 1, 2016.
The incident happened along Brookside drive, Westlands, bringing the death toll from construction sites to eight in less than a month’s time in the same area.
The three were part of a ten-member workforce that was constructing a water channel in the swampy area when the adjacent wall collapsed.
They were diverting a river in the area that was flowing onto the road under the orders of a private developer.
ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION
Nairobi City Council had earmarked buildings in the area for demolition and said construction in the area was a breach of the law.
Parklands MCA Jaffer Kassam said the construction was illegal and the requisite precautionary measures were ignored.
“We are tracking down the contractor and the owner of the home for questioning because we could not trace them at the time of the incident,” said Mr Kassam who promised to have them arrested.
A survivor, Mr Evans Mwalishi, said: “We told the foreman that it was not safe with the 10-feet deep trench but he did not take us seriously. It did not take 30 minutes before the wall caved in and buried us but only seven of us came out alive.”

KANGEMI PRIMARY TRANSFORMED BY TIM WANYONYI

It is the only public primary school in the expansive Mountain View Ward. The school has a current enrollment of 1,846 pupils and 30 teachers. The school bore the brunt of a ballooning population of its catchment comprising of Gichagi, Rift Valley, Village Inn and St Joseph informal settlement areas.  The free primary education programme introduced in January 2003 positively contributed to an increased enrollment of pupils at the school .The high enrollment with the limited physical facilities at the school resulted in congested classrooms. THOUSANDS OF KIBAGARE SLUM DWELLERS IN WESTLANDS FACE POTENTIAL EVICTIONS

At least ten t housand Kibagare Slum dwellers  are threatened with eviction from their homes and businesses following a verbal eviction notice which sources point to the nearby Nairobi School Principal. According to the Kibagare Informal Settlement leadership, last week, the Deputy President visited Nairobi School and was notified by the school the need to set up a perimeter wall to cordon off the school land.  A day after the visit, the Kibagare leaders were summoned for a meeting with the principal of the school where he told them that a wall is supposed to be built on the disputed land which is about 4 acres. He was categorical that the land belongs to Nairobi School and the residents have no option but to voluntarily leave or be forcefully evicted.
