MIRADI MITAANI:THE ROAD TO EMPOWERING WESTLANDS YOUTH BY TIM WANYONYI

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi  is a calm, amiable, soft-spoken and gentleman. Tim is an anomaly in Kenyan politics because of his innovative servant leadership that breaks the barriers and build a bright future for the youth.

Youth engagement and youth empowerment are close to his heart. In his 2013 campaigns Hon Tim Wanyonyi promised the youth of his commitment to create new self employment opportunities. Through his innovative Miradi Mitaani the legislator has impacted more than 6000 youth who are self reliant.

Miradi Mitaani is an initiative designed to empower youth groups with Income Generating Activities (IGAs) that provide employment to the youth while increasing the income of the group members.

It has gone a long way by targeting vulnerable youth who represent more than 50% of the Westlands population. These are youth who needed to be nurtured to gain positive attitudes towards economic independence through entrepreneurship.

Through the programme's first phase Hon Wanyonyi has issued equipment, tools and machines such as car wash machines, sewing machines, motorbikes, salon equipment, printing machines among others to more than 250 youth groups (6,000 members) from across the constituency . The equipment has been used by the youth to set up and expand their businesses that act as a direct source of employment. The youth are mainly drawn from the vast informal settlements of Githogoro, Deep Sea, Kibagare and Kangemi.

This has reduced idleness and vulnerability of many Westlands youth to participate in crime. The MIRADI MITAANI PROGRAM has given the youth in the constituency the opportunity to engage in self employment by acquiring grantss in the form of equipment or tools to engage in sustainable entrepreneurship.

As Hon Tim Wanyonyi seeks re-election in the August 2017 polls we can only expect a more intensive and expansive programme that resonates with the limited employment opportunities and innovative measures to empower the youth to be self employed.

KANGEMI PRIMARY TRANSFORMED BY TIM WANYONYI

It is the only public primary school in the expansive Mountain View Ward. The school has a current enrollment of 1,846 pupils and 30 teachers. The school bore the brunt of a ballooning population of its catchment comprising of Gichagi, Rift Valley, Village Inn and St Joseph informal settlement areas.  The free primary education programme introduced in January 2003 positively contributed to an increased enrollment of pupils at the school .The high enrollment with the limited physical facilities at the school resulted in congested classrooms. The defunct city council failure to allocate resources to the school further  contributed to the sorry state of affairs with the school infrastructure being overstretched. THOUSANDS OF KIBAGARE SLUM DWELLERS IN WESTLANDS FACE POTENTIAL EVICTIONS

Aug 1st, 2016 George Kidi Kiprono Kibagare Slum Dwellers demonstrating peacefully on Aug 1, 2016 led by Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi against an illegal verbal eviction notice issued by the Nairobi School Principal. At least ten t housand Kibagare Slum dwellers  are threatened with eviction from their homes and businesses following a verbal eviction notice which sources point to the nearby Nairobi School Principal. According to the Kibagare Informal Settlement leadership, last week, the Deputy President visited Nairobi School and was notified by the school the need to set up a perimeter wall to cordon off the school land.  A day after the visit, the Kibagare leaders were summoned for a meeting with the principal of the school where he told them that a wall is supposed to be built on the disputed land which is about 4 acres. He was categorical that the land belongs to Nairobi School and the residents have no option but to voluntarily leave or be forcefully evicted.
