GENIUS ON A WHEELCHAIR
He is a genius, he is a mentor, he is a philanthropist.
He is Hon. Tim Wanyonyi.
This is not the Titanic. It is neither a soap opera, nor is it any art of fiction. This is the story of a man who has not only lived his life beyond the shadows of misfortune but has also carried and is still conveying the lives of the less fortunate from the pits of despair to the horizon of hope. Hope that will journey them to achieving decent livelihoods for them and generations to come.
Sprays of bullets did not kill his dream.
In 1998, he was shot by gunmen a few meters away from Nairobi Ngara Estate by some unknown gang men that shattered his spinal cord rendering him unable to walk. But this man is no ordinary man. He may not walk, but his ambition is certainly flying. His achievement in life has shown that to him ,that was just a dark cloud that was to pass and expose the silver lining of his outstanding wit. He has lived beyond the shadow of that heinous act. Does this gang really think they disabled him? Joke is on them. They are the victims of disability. Tim is as unstoppable as he is diligent. He has achieved a lot for the society, continually making his world a better place. Clearly, the only disability is that which is conceived in the minds of those who stop to dream. It has really never been a physical shortcoming.
Wheeling through the muddy waters of Kenyan politics.
Hon. Tim Wetangula Wanyonyi did not acquire the honorary title while walking on his feet .But how then did he achieve this coveted title? He dared to wheel through the muddy waters of Kenyan politics, walking on his brain to the deepest ends and behold, he did not stumble like the Biblical Peter. Unlike Peter he did not have any doubt. He kept the faith ,showing prowess and brilliance until he earned the ultimate honorary of becoming Westlands Member of Parliament on the 4th of March, 2013. His opponents, none of whom was wheeling, could not beat the zealous and industrous Tim Wanyonyi regardless of the billions of money they own. Now at least you know that he earned the his title. He certainly did. He did not await nomination into the Kenya National Assembly by his ODM party, to represent people with disability, despite knowing that he deserved it and that he could have very easily earned such a slot. Furthermore, Westlands is not any ordinary constituency. It is the economic hub of the Kenyan capital, hosting both the richest and the poorest Kenyans.
His commandeering innovation and invention has helped in turning around the livelihoods of many:
He is a brainchild and one of the pioneers behindKenya Paraplegic Organization (KPO).A project that is giving hope to many people on the wheelchair. He is the CEO. Their most famous initiative in the recent past was dubbed “Bring Zack Back Home”, an initiative that is being used to set up the first spinal cord treatment facility in Kenya.
- He is the founder and the pioneer behind Tim Wanyonyi Foundation , a foundation that has revived the dreams of so many needy students in Kenya. It pays for over 200 students fee in one year.
- He is the elected Member of parliament for Westlands constituency,a position he uses to promote talented individuals, educate needy students, upgrade informal settlements and create employment for the jobless, among other activities.
- He has employed many young promising lawyers in his law firmWetangula and Co. advocates of whom he is a mentor and a great inspiration.
Hon Tim Wanyonyi Wetangula's life is thus comparable to the proverbial cat. He has defied odds to achieve a rare fete. He has created positive change around him. He is living the philosophy of the worlds’ favorite statesman Nelson Rolihlahla Madiba Mandela who believed that, “What counts in life is not the mere fact we have lived. It is the difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
He is a hero, a great leader, a genius on wheels, a living icon worth being celebrated by the present and the generations to come.
