Kangemi Market Modernization
The Nairobi County Governor H.E. Evans Kidero has assured the Westlands Constituency MP Hon Tim
Wanyonyi as well as other Westlands Association Stakeholders that the
construction of a modern market will commence in Kangemi in less than three months time. The market has been subject to various court wrangles regarding land ownership. Additionally, the market has been characterized by frequent demolitions, poor garbage management as well as an inaccessible path through the market. The World Bank has sponsored the initiative at a cost of KES 1.6
Billion. The Governor was speaking during the Westlands Association's consultative stakeholders breakfast meeting held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Pride Inn Hotel in Highridge/Parklands Ward, Westlands Constituency.
Hon Tim Wanyonyi Petitions to the County
This is good news for
the Westlands people bearing in mind the numerous petitions that Hon Tim
Wanyonyi has filed with the Governor on issues and challenges that lie within
the mandate of the County Government. The governor also promised to fast track
the construction of the Westlands Market as well as that of City Park Market to
enable quick relocation of the various traders who are at limbo.
Completion of Westlands Market and City Park Market
Westlands Market has
taken more than eight years since its construction began in 2008 while City
Park Market was razed down by fire on February 5, 2015. The County Government
is setting up 1,200 stalls in City Park market .The Asian Foundation is co-sponsoring the construction of the parking lot in the market. The County will also add two
floors on the Westlands Permanent Market to accommodate all the traders from the Westlands
Triangle Markets (Open Air, Curio and Permanent markets).
Construction of Westlands Bus Stop
The stakeholders were
also reliably informed that the Nairobi County Government will very soon commence the construction
of a modern Westlands Bus Stop adjacent to Waumini building. This he said will
reduce the chaos witnessed at the stage.
Renew Land Lease Before Expiry
The Governor also
called upon the Westlands land owners to renew their leases as most of
them are almost expiring. He stated the importance of renewing land leases ten
years before expiry. He added that this would prevent reallocation of the land
to new owners by the National Land Commission (NLC).
