PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN WESTLANDS LIVING THE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY DREAM

Of all the ODM MP's running in Nairobi, I am most impressed by the solid development record of the Hon Tim Wanyonyi who despite being a Person Living With Disability (PWD), still outshone able colleagues in the 11th parliament. Tim's vision is contained in a comprehensive strategic plan he crafted soon after being elected as MP 2013.

Among my favourite of Hon Tim Wanyonyi's projects was his commitment to improve education outcomes at all levels of learning in Westlands Constituency through integration of ICT in primary schools curricular.

Recognizing that digital technology has the power to transform how young people learn, Hon Wanyonyi prioritized the setting up ICT facilities in schools within the constituency. The MP went ahead with the unprecedented implementation and supplied 17 of the 18 primary schools with fully equipped computer laboratories. The 18th school was only omitted because Safaricom Limited had, through its Corporate Social Responsibility program, equipped Muguga Green Primary which neighbours its Headquarters along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.

Each ICT laboratory in the 17 schools in Westlands was supplied with 40 fully functional Windows computers, complete with a networked server which is linked to high-speed internet.

The idea of making all primary schools to embrace digital learning environments emates from studies which have proven that educators who integrate ICT in the leraning process not only increase digital literacy in the early stages of life but they also create more engaging curricula that is further capable of being adapted and personalized for individual learner needs.

This transformative plan is not limited to primary schools only. Whereas, Hon Wanyonyi has already set up a fully fledged computer laboratory at Kangemi Polytechnic as well as at Highridge Girls Secondary School, in the next term Hon Wanyonyi is putting in place plans intended to equip all secondary schools as well as assist the same schools to get e-material to further facilitate learning from the computers.

The MP also plans to use his office to facilitate the schools to use the computer labs for exchange online programmes with other schools in Kenya and beyond.
