Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi has called upon Westlands women to take advantage of the table banking model to transform their lives. He added that table banking brings financial services to the poorest in the society, enabling them eradicate poverty and become financially stable.

Hon Tim further alluded to the role of table banking in advancing Kenya's economic empowerment and family cohesion. He pointed out that active involvement of women in socio-economic activities is crucial in sustainable development of the country.

Speaking during the second anniversary of the Westlands Women Table Banking Programme on Thursday, Aug 4, 2016, the Westlands legislator affirmed his commitment to address women and youth empowerment issues through relevant programs in the Constituency.

"As we celebrate table banking in Westlands, it means we are stabilizing ourselves. Our economy will grow with more women embracing this model.Crime will be a thing of the past. We want to match our ranking as one of the best constituencies in Kenya through supporting our women and youth with  relevant empowerment initiatives."

Westlands Constituency is viewed mainly as home to the rich, mainly because the constituency hosts the affluent Westlands suburbs of Runda, Parklands, Muthaiga, Kitisuru, Loresho and Kyuna, which are arguably Nairobi's richest neighbourhoods.

In the contrary, the latest reports by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2013 and the Society of International Development (SID) 2013 indicate that 25.5% (44,093) of Westlands residents live below the poverty line. This can be attributed to a vast majority of residents who reside in the many informal settlements such as Kangemi, Kibagare, Githogoro and Deep Sea.

The table banking model which was introduced on March 14, 2014 to Westlands women by the Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi has grown steadily to support the welfare of women in the fight against poverty.

So far the Westlands Women Empowerment Programme has a membership of 200 groups and approximately 6,000 women in total. The revolving fund in the groups now stands at KES 39 Million.

The celebrations brought together members of the groups as well as other parties involved in the women economic empowerment movement from various parts of Westlands Constituency. Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero also graced the occasion.

The gathering reflected on various successes of the groups as well as how to address the challenges they face.
