KANGEMI PRIMARY SCHOOL RECEIVES A FACELIFT

Westlands MP, Hon Tim Wanyonyi will this morning handover a fully refurbished Kangemi Primary School. The school which has a population of 1,500 pupils has 36 classrooms which were in deplorable state. The renovations have been carried out by the Westlands National Government Constituency Development Fund. 
The importance of the renewal can not be understated given that the school is the only public primary school in the sprawling Gichagi Village within the congested Kangemi Informal Settlements. 
Due to the fact that there are few public schools in Kangemi relative to the population of pupils and students and also compounded by the dilapidated  state of public schools has led to mushrooming of informal schools within the slums.
These informal schools offer poor standards of education, lack sufficient space and lack basic facilities. With the renovation, Kangemi primary school will have a new lease of life by attracting more enrollment and provide a powerful learning environment for learning for the pupils restoring confidence in the community.

Hon Wanyonyi is on course to ensure that all the public primary schools in Westlands Constituency receive a facelift as per his electioneering manifesto. The schools which have been in existence for over 40 years require major rehabilitation after neglect by the defunct Nairobi City Council.

Kangemi Primary School pupils studying in one of the refurbished classrooms courtesy of Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi. Kangemi Primary School was established in 1927. It is the only public primary school in the expansive Mountain View Ward. The school has a current enrollment of 1,846 pupils and 30 teachers. The school bore the brunt of a ballooning population of its catchment comprising of Gichagi, Rift Valley, Village Inn and St Joseph informal settlement areas.  The free primary education programme introduced in January 2003 positively contributed to an increased enrollment of pupils at the school .The high enrollment with the limited physical facilities at the school resulted in congested classrooms. THOUSANDS OF KIBAGARE SLUM DWELLERS IN WESTLANDS FACE POTENTIAL EVICTIONS

Aug 1st, 2016 George Kidi Kiprono Kibagare Slum Dwellers demonstrating peacefully on Aug 1, 2016 led by Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi against an illegal verbal eviction notice issued by the Nairobi School Principal. At least ten t housand Kibagare Slum dwellers  are threatened with eviction from their homes and businesses following a verbal eviction notice which sources point to the nearby Nairobi School Principal. According to the Kibagare Informal Settlement leadership, last week, the Deputy President visited Nairobi School and was notified by the school the need to set up a perimeter wall to cordon off the school land.  A day after the visit, the Kibagare leaders were summoned for a meeting with the principal of the school where he told them that a wall is supposed to be built on the disputed land which is about 4 acres. He was categorical that the land belongs to Nairobi School and the residents have no option but to voluntarily leave or be forcefully evicted.

Westlands Constituency has over the years had representation in parliament starting with Fitz Remedios who ascended to power in 1963 ushering the late ECK Chairman Samuel Kivuitu in 1969, Isaac waweru 1974, Krishan chander 1979, Samuel Kivuitu 1983, Njoroge Mungai 1988, Amin Walji 1992, and Fred Ngumo who took over in a by election in 1994 to be at the helm of power for 19 years to 2013 when he resigned from active politics.
